Community value of historic Glossop pub recognised

A historic pub in Glossop has been designated as a valuable asset to the local community in a move to help safeguard its future.

Questions were raised over the future of the building after plans were put forward for The Royal Oak pub situated at the bottom of the Snake Pass to be demolished.

The old coaching house is part of the areas transport history and was a stop to rest and feed horses on the long journey from Manchester to Sheffield.

A nomination form to list the building as an Asset of Community Value received the support of over 50 residents in the area and the listing has been granted.

The building is said to be in a good state of repair and is being used, as it has been for years, as a public house and restaurant and also for people to meet socially.

High Peak Borough Councillor Paul Hardy was one of those to support the bid alongside Alan Culley and Mark Miles.

Cllr Hardy said: “Many organisations use it for meetings and other functions so it would be a travesty if we lost the building.

“The approaches into Glossop have not looked too good over the past few years but the approach from the summit of the Snake Pass past the Golf club and the Royal Oak is probably the most pleasant in our beautiful area.”

The campaigners now hope the landlord, Chris Sidebottom, will be able to operate the business on a full-time basis and people from the area, and those passing along the A57, will be able to enjoy the hospitality they once did.
