Community helps Charlesworth School get new play equipment

Community spirit and generosity has helped to ensure that pupils at Charlesworth School can now benefit from a range of brand new equipment in their playground.

The school day has taken on a new dimension for the children, who can make use of a double climbing frame on the school field, a new mud kitchen and outdoor storage units, outdoor chalkboards, and outdoor sand and water tables.

The project cost over £7,000 and all the money was raised by the Friends of Charlesworth School, who held a socially distanced opening ceremony recently at the Long Lane site.

The lockdown earlier this year and subsequent coronavirus restrictions have presented challenges along the way, but it’s been made possible thanks to some creative fundraising ideas.

Pupils were challenged to walk 500 miles collectively during the lockdown over the summer, with an original fundraising target of £500 set.

But thanks to the kindness of parents, friends, family and the wider community, more than £1,500 was raised.

The project was also kindly supported by a number of local businesses, groups and individuals.

The Friends of Charlesworth School said a special thank you to George and Jean Wharmby, county councillors for the Glossop and Charlesworth division, who have given £1,200 from their community fund towards the new play area.

Charlesworth Independent Chapel, which is a foundation church for the school, also kindly donated along with The George and Dragon pub and Glossop Rugby Club.

The school’s parent group also thanked Lymefield Garden Centre in Broadbottom for their kind donation of turf to enable the project to be completed.

The opening ceremony, which took place on Tuesday 3 November, was attended by the main donors to the project and was streamed on the PTA’s Facebook page.

Newly appointed head teacher Philip Whiston cut the ribbon to declare the playground officially open and pupils were invited to play on it that afternoon in the sunshine.
