Changes to bin collections over Christmas in High Peak

Residents throughout the High Peak are being advised about changes to bin collections over Christmas and New Year.

High Peak Borough Council has issued details of some collections which will be moved during the festive period.

Christmas is a busy enough time in any year and especially so this year with the Covid restrictions to factor in – so remembering any changes to your bin collections is probably not high on your list!

The borough council has put together an online bin checker. You can just enter your postcode or street name and get information about collections for your address, including details about collections over the festive period.

For more information, go to https://www.highpeak.gov.uk/findyourbinday

Councillor Jean Todd, Executive Councillor for Climate Change and the Environment, said: “Christmas is always a busy time and, this year in particular, we all have so much to think about and plan for so we’ve made checking your collections and any Christmas changes simple.

“Our website also has information about what goes in your bins just in case anyone needs a reminder so waste and recycling is one less thing to worry about this Christmas.”

Christmas Day

If you're due to put your black bin out on Christmas Day (Friday 25 December), it will instead be collected on Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December).

If your brown recycling bin is due to be collected on Christmas Day, it will be collected on Wednesday 23 December.

Monday 28 December

If your black bin is due for collection on Monday 28 December, it will be collected on Tuesday 29 December.

Brown bins and black sacks for properties on the van round due for collection on 28 December will instead be emptied on Wednesday 30 December.

Friday 1 January

If your black rubbish bin is due to be put out on New Year's Day (Friday 1 January), it will be collected on Saturday 2 January.

Brown recycling bins due for collection on New Year's Day will instead be collected on New Year's Eve (Thursday 31 December).

Bins must be presented by 6am on collection day.

No green bin collections

There will be no green-lidded bin collections from Monday 21 December to Friday 1 January. They will restart on Monday 4 January.

People are being urged to still use their green bins over the festive period - putting in any vegetable peelings, cooked and uncooked food waste, and any festive garden foliage.

What if my bin is missed?

Residents are advised to check https://www.highpeak.gov.uk/hp/council-services/bins-and-recycling/bin-collections-service-update before completing a missed bin collection form, as adverse weather, poor access and road closures can mean that staff are unable to collect bins.

The council say if that happens staff will return as soon as possible to complete rounds and residents do not need to report it as a missed collection. However, missed collections due to bins being put out on the wrong day will not be returned for.

What about disposing of Christmas cards, wrapping paper and trees?

Christmas cards can be recycled in your brown bin if they don’t contain glitter or foil.

Wrapping paper can’t be recycled if it contains plastic, foils or glitter. To test it, simply scrunch the paper in your hand – if it remains ‘scrunched’ it can be recycled in your brown bin.

Natural Christmas trees should be cut up and placed inside the green-lidded bin or, if less than 5ft tall, left whole beside the bin on collection day.

Trees can also be taken to the recycling centre in Buxton.

The borough council doesn't operate a shredding service and is warning anyone who dumps trees in car parks - or anywhere else - that it is flytipping, which could lead to prosecution and a fine up to £50,000.
