Campaign launched to safeguard vital bus service

Hayfield Bus Station, where the 358 bus route begins in the High Peak.

A campaign has been launched as part of efforts to ensure the 358 bus service, which runs from Hayfield to Stockport, continues beyond October.

Local resident Steve Grieve, who is spearheading the move, said the service operated by Stagecoach is vital to the local community.

He has organised a petition that is available for people to sign in Hayfield and New Mills and arranged a public meeting to take place in New Mills on 17 August.

While it appears the 358 service will continue from Stockport as far as Strines, Steve said there has been no indication the bus service will continue into Derbyshire.

He told the Chronicle: “It has wide ranging implications. I use the bus but I didn’t realise how many people depend on this service.”

Steve said the 358 is used for people to travel to work, the doctors and hospital appointments, as well as by schoolchildren and students to get to college and sixth form.

“We want to put pressure on Derbyshire County Council and Stagecoach to keep this bus service running like it is now," he told us.

The public meeting will take place on Wednesday 17 August at New Mills Town Hall from 7.30pm.

The meeting is being chaired by the New Mills and Hayfield County Councillor Anne Clarke and MP Robert Largan is due to attend.

Steve said he is also hoping to get a representative from Stagecoach to attend.

“It is going to be a constructive meeting," he said. "We want to work with them and want this service to continue.”
