A marathon month for one Glossop youngster

Luca Hennessy decided to do a marathon in March but he carried on walking and managed four.

That despite cutting his foot in a kitchen accident.

Luca, 11, from Whitfield Avenue, Glossop, wanted to do something during the lockdown and raise cash for a good cause at the same time.

His mum Clare said: “Luca had heard of Macmillan and wanted to raise money for them.

“He asked me how far was a marathon and when I told him he decided to do a ‘Marathon in March for Macmillan’. However, once he started, he decided it was too easy, so changed it to a marathon a week.

“So, throughout March, he walked 104.8 miles in total.”

Luca, a student at Glossopdale School, experienced most kinds of weather during his March marathons.

It was ‘teeming with rain’ when he headed for the hills and trekked around Mossy Lea, but the sun was shining when he took on Derbyshire Level.

Luca’s plans however hit a hitch on day two when he was helping with the washing up and accidentally knocked over a glass which shattered on the floor leaving him with a cut foot.

Clare added: “He had to have some days off. However, he persevered and finished the final two miles on March 31.”

Luca, who covered various parts of Glossop during his month-long marathons has so far raised £724 for Macmillan.
