Judges had a difficult job picking between 248 entries for the 38th Derbyshire Open Art competition, back after a two-year break.
Run by Derbyshire County Council’s Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, entries came from across the region including 25 entries from young people under 21 years old.
An Exhibition featuring entries selected by the judge's artist and illustrator Andrea Joseph, gallery owner Isla Dawes, curator Matt Edwards and Carol Jones, from the Gallery's Friends group has now opened and will run until 2 September, admission is free.
Derbyshire County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture, Tourism and Climate Change Councillor Barry Lewis said: “I’m sure the exhibition will be well visited over the summer."
He said the featured work celebrates the county and promotes a good feeling about living in Derbyshire, the landscape, architecture and the friendliness of the people.
Sheffield artist Cath Dunn won the Derbyshire Trophy and the Derbyshire Young Artist prize was awarded to Esme Blue, aged nine, from Alsager.
The Friends of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery sponsored prize was won by Patrick Jones from Knutsford and the work will be added to the museum’s collection.
Derbyshire County Council Awards were given to Laura Critchlow, from Buxton for a Self Portrait with my dad, Eve Bridges from Hayfield for Famine floral and Pauline Rignall from Tideswell for Gazing Towards Higher Tor.
Among those commended were Jenny Bowden, Janet Hallam-Elvin and Sandra Orme all from Buxton, Judy Tregenza, from the Hope Valley and six-year-old Juliet Burns from Chapel-en-le-Frith for her work entitled Flower Field.
Derbyshire County Council remains the principal supporter of the exhibition, with continuing support from Tarmac and the Friends of Buxton Museum & Art Gallery.
One prize, the Visitors Choice prize, will be chosen by visitors to the gallery who will vote over the coming weeks. The winner will be announced in August.
