Things to do in Tameside in Winter

In Tameside we know all about the pitfalls of a frosty winter! Icy parks, snow-filled roads and closed schools are just the tip of the iceberg! But that doesn’t mean the latter months of the year can’t be an enjoyable time when we explore new and different things to do in winter.

So if you’re thinking about what you can do in our local area when the winter months finally hit, here are just a few things to do in Tameside in winter you might want to consider:

Hartshead Pike Snow Walk

We are lucky in our little corner of the North to have been blessed with so many beautiful views and walks. Chances are, if you live in Tameside, you won’t need to look for very long before you find a hiking or walking route that’s tried and tested for its glorious walking paths and stunning scenery.

This is especially so in winter. With a fresh layer of snow on the ground and a chill in the air, many of our favourite walks in Tameside are transformed into something straight out of a fairy-tale!

But, if you haven’t already, one point on the map you definitely need to visit in the winter months is Hartshead Pike.

Clear to see from miles around, you’ll find the Pike just as you drive into Mossley from Ashton, heading past Ashton Golf Club – you literally can’t miss it.

Walks over this hill are popular for year round, but if you choose to brave it when it’s been snowing, you’ll be treated to glacier-white panoramic views of the hills across Tameside, with the view stretching across Manchester City Centre and beyond if conditions are clear enough.

Then, once you’ve finished admiring your surroundings, you can stop off at The Hartshead Inn for a hot brew, or something a little stronger to warm you up!

Not only this, but if you choose to make the visit on Bonfire Night or New Year’s Eve, you’ll be treated to the very best and widest firework display you’ll ever see. Best of all? It’s free!

Visit Uppermill

It might be a little outside the Tameside borough limits, but we’re willing to let that one slide to include our next entry on our list.

Uppermill is always busy year round, and no wonder! With so many interesting and unique independent shops, café’s, pubs and bars to choose from, it comes as no surprise the town as never really dropped in popularity among visitors.

The same can be said for tourists, too. The town is still classed as a tourist destination, and if it continues to grow at the rate it has been over the past few years, there’s no sign of this being dropped any time soon.

But when you visit Uppermill in winter, especially when snow has fallen, you’ll find the appearance and the vibrancy of the place totally changes.

It is transformed from an enjoyable day or night out to an entrancing winter village, with plenty of decorations to show for it.

Many of the bars and café’s we talked about join in on the winter spirit, too, and often alter their menu to include some of your winter favourites like Eggnog and Irish Coffee… that’ll warm you right up!

You can find plenty of striking examples of how the town looks in winter online, but if you want to experience the real article, we highly recommend visiting yourself.

Ashton Market

If you’re familiar with Tameside, or live here, you’ll no-doubt be familiar with Ashton Market.

In fact, there have been records of a market being held in Ashton for hundreds of years, dating back to the thirteenth century. But it wasn’t until 1829 that work began on the building we know as Ashton Market today.

The market itself is open six days a week, so there’s plenty of time for you to pop down and explore what all the individual shops and eateries have to offer.

But a great time to head down is over the Christmas period. Around this time, many of the stalls undergo a Christmas makeover and begin stocking a wide collection of all your favourite Christmas foods, drinks and decorations.

The same goes for the outdoor market, which is home to even more stalls than the extensive indoor market, if you can believe that!

Plus, if you head over to the Arcades shopping centre just across the way, you’ll be greeted with their traditionally extravagant Christmas decorations that usually go up sometime in November, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy!

Daisy Nook Country Park

Few parks in our area can offer the same woodland tranquillity and escape than Daisy Nook Country Park.

A favourite spot for walkers and nature lovers across Tameside, as well as those visiting from other places, Daisy Nook is a delightful day out year round.

But in winter, all it takes is a thin layer of frost or snow on the ground to take you to a dazzling winter wonderland.

All the beautiful greenery and plant life is seemingly replaced with spreads of sparkly white. And, if the temperature is cold enough, you might even catch a glimpse of a beautiful frozen lake.

If the snow is laid on thick, this one should probably be left to our more experienced walkers or able explorers as it can get quite difficult to cover some of the more uneven terrain. But its undoubtedly a fantastic winter walk.

Then, you can stop off at the on-site café for a cosy cup of tea or hot chocolate for the kids to round of a perfect day!
