The Show That Time Forgot ~ Sunday 28/11/2021

FIRST HOUR

(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me (Sandie Shaw)
(1964) ...  songwriting royalty Burt Bacharach and Hal David supplied the song which would be one of her biggest and best known hits

I Am The Beat (The Look)
(1980) ... I wonder how many people were fooled by the title, into thinking that this good old stomper was a hit for... The Beat, who were successful around the same time. I Am The Beat made the Top 10 but was to be the only major hit for The Look, who haiied from Ely, Cambridgeshire [W]

Gypsies Tramps and Thieves (Cher)
... from the first of today's featured years ~ her first US chart-topper which made the Top 5 here, in ireland, Australia and New Zealand

George Harrison tribute

Tomorrow (29th November) is 20 years to the day since the death, aged 58, of George Harrison, following a long illnessThese songs feature two of his lead vocals for The Beatles, both from film-connected albums. In the second hour I've included a couple of songs from later years

I'm Happy Just To Dance With You (The Beatles)
(1964) ... from A Hard Day's Night, which consisted entirely of Lennon & McCartney songs ~ including this one, which they set aside for George to sing

I Need You (The Beatles)
(1965) ...  one of the first self-penned songs by George to be included on a Fab Four album.  I Need You was his solo spot on the Help! album and in the film of the same name, in the same way that I'm Happy Just To Dance With You  had been on screen and on record for A Hard Day's Night

---------------------------

A Message To You Rudy (The Specials)
(1979) ... Top 10-er for the Coventry ska-2Tone legends who are still going strong, having reunited a few years ago

Newsround pre-Tameside: 50 years ago ~ 1971

Jeepster (T Rex)
(1971) ... a surefire No.1? You could have been forgiven for thinking that a new single by high-flying Marc Bolan and co, following  two previous '71 chart-toppers (Get It On, and Hot Love) would be a shoe-in for the top spot. Strange things can happen chartwise, though, in the run-up to Christmas, Jeepster was ultimately pipped at the post by.... a certain novelty hit which is on the playlist later in the hour.....

Coz I Luv You (Slade)
(1971) ... first of six No.1s in Slade's magnificent dozen from 1971-74 which also included three singles peaking at No.2, two at No.3 and one at No.4. The hits kept on coming until 1977, with more following in the first half of the '80s

Something Tells Me (Something's Going To Happen Tonight) (Cilla Black)
... the song which took over from Step Inside Love as the opening theme of her BBC telly show ~ and went on to be a Top 3 hit

No Matter How I Try (Gilbert O' Sullivan)
... one of several singles which made him one of the biggest chart stars of the '70s. Since then, Gilbert has continued to write and record his own songs  After more than 50 years, his fan-base remains as impressive and as loyal as ever

Run Baby Run (The Newbeats)
... Northern Soul favourite which finally became a big hit here, six years after its original US release.  Bread and Butter  (1964,  # 15) was their only other chart placing this side of the pond

Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West) (Benny Hill)
...  here it is then, the comedy classic which stood in the way of T Rex completing a hat-trick of 1971 # 1s (with Jeepster, played earlier). The tale of a deadly rivalry between the friendly 'milko' and the fiendish Two Ton Ted from Teddington 'who drove the baker's van'  snatched the top spot from Slade to claim the coveted Christmas # 1.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (Joan Baez)
....  a rare UK chart appearance for the respected American folk singer-songwriter

---------------------------

SECOND HOUR

All Those Years Ago (George Harrison)
(1981) ... continuing our tribute to George, who left us far too soon, 20 years ago this week ~ All Those Years Ago, written and sung by George, with Paul McCartney on backing vocals and Ringo Starr on drums made a fitting tribute to their old band-mate John Lennon, who had died a few months earlier.  More later **

Pack Up (Eliza Doolittle)
(2010) ... a 21st Century song with echoes of the famous First World War sing-a-long, about packing up your troubles in your old kit bag... and smiling...

Be My Baby (The Ronettes)                                                                                                     ...
.... teaser track for our second featured year by one of two girl groups in producer Phil Spector's roster of artists. The other lot were also prominent in this particular year and will be appearing later....

Absolutely Lyricless ~ the instrumental break
... groups who are usually very vocal

Machine Gun (The Commodores)
(1974) ... best known for Lionel Richie's lead vocals, they made their debut on the chart with this funky instrumental. Machine Gun was also the title track of the first Commodores album which credits Lionel for 'vocals, keyboards and saxophone'  [W]

Return of The Los Palmas 7 (Madness)
(1981) ... lyricless fun from start to finish ~ the Nutty Boys in their heyday, a '7' in more than just the title, # 7 was its highest chart position and it was also their seventh hit in a row, with plenty more to follow

--------------------------

Any Road (George Harrison) **
(2002) ...  opening track on Brainwashed, his posthumously released final album which had taken more than a decade to complete. Any Road, very similar in style to his work with The Travelling Wilburys in the late '80s, was one of the first to be completed, We'll draw a line under this modest tribute by re-winding to George's first time in the spotlight, on the Beatles' first LP....on the way next...

Newsround pre-Tameside: 58 years ago ~ 1963

Do You Want To Know A Secret (The Beatles)  **
...  a 20-year-old George Harrison, the youngest of the Fab Four stepped up for a solo spot on their first album Please Please Me. Billy J. Kramer &  The Dakotas took their version to # 1 within months

I Only Want To Be With You (Dusty Springfield)
... Dusty's career launching debut as a solo singer having previously been part of the family group The Springfields.  I Only Want To Be With You has been covered many times by different artists including The Bay City Rollers and The Tourists, both in the late '70s

I Wanna Be Your Man (The Rolling Stones)
...  Lennon and McCartney song on The Beatles' second album With The Beatles which became a hit for another up-and-coming group who were about to become their biggest rivals

Sugar and Spice (The Searchers)
... # 2 follow up to their chart-topping debut Sweets For My Sweet. Sugar and Spice was held off the top spot amid stiff competition, mainly from their fellow Liverpudlians

Fools Rush In (Rick Nelson)
... Rick (known as Ricky in the early years of his career) with a much covered song dating from 1940.  Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Shirley Bassey, Elvis Presley and Brenda Lee are just a handful of the many different recording artists who have included it in their repertoire [W]

You Were Made For Me (Freddie & The Dreamers)
... their third single in a row to make the Top 3, a fine run of form which they were unable to sustain during the following year

Then He Kissed Me (The Crystals)
...  as hinted at earlier ~ the other girl group to receive the 'big wall of sound' treatment.  Then He Kissed Me became Then I Kissed Her when covered a few years later by The Beach Boys

Don't Talk To Him (Cliff Richard & The Shadows)
... one of  only a very few songs  in Cliff's long career for which he can claim a writing credit (jointly with Shadows guitarist Bruce Welch)

---------------------------

SHOW THEME:
